Fit Dog: Tips and Tricks to Give Your Pet a Longer, Healthier, Happier Life

A customized guide to all things D.O.G.

Dog ownership has skyrocketed. In fact, more than half of American households own at least one dog. Today's dog owners are interacting more with their dogs, spending more money on them, demanding more expensive services, and taking them everywhere, from cruises to road trips.

Fit Dog covers every part of a dog's life, and includes topics seldom covered in dog books, such as budgeting, three methods of CPR, and party games that join people, guests and dogs in the pursuit of fun. The book addresses problem solving and beginning to advanced tricks that will give a dog a physical and mental workout.

Fit Dog guides owners to expert care for their loyal companions in all ways, from daily fitness and health care to pet-proofing a home for a senior dog's safety.

Topics include:

  • How Healthy is Your Dog? - veterinary care, medications
  • Knowing Your Dog - communication, barking, moods, intelligence, popular breeds
  • Food and Nutrition - feeding tips, portion size, buying/making food (recipes), treats, weight
  • Obedience Training - how to train, essential commands, clickers/pointers, problem behaviors
  • Household Chore Tricks - such as Fetch the Remote, Tidy Your Toys, Bring Me...
  • Basic Show Tricks - such as Shake Hands, Take a Bow, Sit Pretty
  • Advanced Show Tricks - such as Say Your Prayers, Spin in Circles, Play Dead

Preface:

Introduction

Think of this book as your customized guide to all things D.O.G. It is filled with step-by-step guidelines, tips and tricks and insights--all designed to ensure your canine chum enjoys a long, healthy and enjoyable life.

Sure, cats may outnumber dogs in households all over the planet, but dogs still hold the acknowledgement of being man's (and woman's) best friend. Canine popularity is stronger than ever. Face it, our dogs definitely influence us in what we buy, what activities we do, where we live and how we decorate our homes. I readily admit that I bought my home because it had a fenced backyard and space for me to construct an enclosed canine condo on the side of my house with a doggy door from my living room. I was never big into running races until I had the opportunity to participate in 5-K9 races (that's 5km races with people running with their leashed dogs). Walk into my home and you will find petfriendly flooring: tile and laminate--two surfaces far easier to clean up doggy accidents than thick carpeting.

Paw through the pages of this book to discover such things as how to outsmart your misbehaving dog by re-channeling his need to dig or chew in more acceptable ways. Find out how to stretch your family budget without sacrificing the quality of care for your dog, as well as basic first aid for your pet. And learn how to make smart nutritional choices and prevent your dog from turning into an overweight chowhound.

I am honored to be your guide for you and your 21st century dog. Ever since I was a toddler, I've shared my life with a dog or two. My canine friendship began with a sweet, slightly overweight Beagle named Crackers and a spirited Border Collie mixed named Peppy, who joined me swimming at our backyard lake and sharing spots on my bed at night. My current dogs answer to the names Chipper and Cleo. At age 11, Chipper, a Siberian Husky-Golden Retriever mix, maintains her youthful energy and outlook on life. Named for my love of golf, Chipper is a second-chance dog turned canine celebrity, appearing on numerous television shows with me and assisting me in my hands-on pet first aid classes. Cleo, a Miniature Poodle-Basset Hound mix, was rescued as a scared stray and now lives for warming laps and, when the weather is right, surfing. She landed in the Guinness World Records as one of 17 dogs to ride into shore on one surfboard. Now 12, we teasingly refer to her as the "Betty White of K9 Surfers."

Our canines have us at bark. They delight us. They fascinate us. They love us. So, it's time to call your dog over, dive into these pages and learn how to truly be your dog's best friend.
