Make the Perfect Irish Coffee at Home

Today is National Irish Coffee Day, and we think the best way to celebrate is to enjoy a fresh take on this sweet and stimulating cocktail.

Inspired by trips to visit family in Northern Ireland, father-son team Dick and James Strawbridge created this simple recipe as part of their guide to making your own dairy products at home. With just four ingredients, this classic nightcap is as easy to make as it is delicious.

Fresh cream and blended whiskey are vital. Enjoying the finished product next to a peat fire is optional.

Ingredients:

1 measure of Irish whiskey
10 ml (2 teaspoons) brown sugar
250 ml (1 cup) fresh black coffee
60 ml (¼ cup) heavy cream, softly whipped

Directions:

Place the whiskey and sugar in a short glass and stir together with a metal spoon. The sugar is essential to help the cream float on top of the coffee, so don’t omit it. Leave the spoon in as you pour in the hot coffee because it will prevent the glass from cracking due to the sudden change in temperature. Stir well, then spoon the whipped cream on top. Serve immediately.

Serves 1 person.
