Every year as part of Children’s Book Week, authors, illustrators, and storytellers across the US and Canada come together to share their love of reading and telling stories.
Children’s Book Week — which takes place this year on April 30-May 6 in the US and from May 5-12 in Canada — is an annual celebration of books for young people. This year, over 800 North American bookstores, libraries, and schools will celebrate Children’s Book Week with story times, events, and creative workshops just for young readers.
As one of North America’s leading children’s publishers, Firefly Books is getting involved through our May book of the month giveaway. This month, two lucky winners will have the chance to win a kid's prize pack featuring a copy of My Grandmother Ironed the King’s Shirts by Torill Kove and The Cat Came Back by Cordell Barker, plus DVDs of each of the original Oscar-nominated short films.
These two beautifully illustrated books are part of Firefly’s collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), a partnership that began in fall 2017. As the official book publisher for the NFB, Firefly is carrying on the legacy of creative and innovative cinematic storytelling for which both the film board and children’s literature, in general, are known.
Both books capture the creative spirit of Children’s Book Week, with Quill & Quire calling My Grandmother Ironed the King’s Shirts “a fresh, quirky, and funny tall tale that purports to be the narrator’s true account of her own grandmother’s adventures, but which progressively leaves the realm of realism behind.” The Cat Came Back received similarly positive reviews, being called “rollicking good fun."
