Search Instructions

Disclaimer This database is a complete record of all books currently published or distributed by Firefly Books. It does not include out-of-print (OP), cancelled (PC or NL), or out-of-stock-indefinitely (OSI) titles. Every effort is made to keep this database current, correct and up-to-date and it is updated weekly, but in case of discrepancies, the information supplied directly by our order department takes precedent: Prices and availability subject to change without notice. You are searching a fairly simple database where information has been split into fields. Generally only exact strings, with no wild cards, are searched. Capitalization is ignored. While it is possible to search more than one field at a time, it is not recommended -- or at least has to be done with great care. If your searches are not returning values one of the most likely causes is values in more than one field - we recommend using the clear button before entering search values. It is straightforward to search for a specific book: simply enter the author's name, and/or a key word from the title. The author field will accept some inexact matches (it will return results for an entry reading "John A. Smith" where the search request is "John Smith"), but title searches must include the exact sequence of letters you enter, so shorter is better. If you do not get results, use only a single word and truncate it. For example: cooking will return only books with cooking in the field. But if you enter cook your search will return all books that include cookbook, cooking, cooker, etc. As another example: if you are searching for the book title "Advanced Origami" entering adv orig or advance orig (missing the final "d" from "Advanced") will not return a result. But advanced orig will work because it is an exact match to part of the title. Below the book cover (if available) you'll note a link for "print page." This creates a simplified page of major information that should be easy to print or copy into another document. Our recommendation for subject searches is to first try a specific, but short word, in the "title" field on the assumption that the book's name will include its subject. Do not forget to try a "Series" search. Publishers often group similar books into a series and this a useful means of finding books in an area. There are over 3,000 records in the database, and subject keywording has not been systematically done for all records. The keyword field is searched for exact matches, so do not use combinations of search words. So, as with title, always start a search by using the most generic and shortest single word possible. The Keyword field include the following information:
Firefly publishes a yearly catalog of children's books for the school and library market in the United States. It includes a Thematic Index to our children's books and it has been re-created on our web database. Not all of our children's books have been classified but this is a useful way of isolating our children's books related to specific themes. Another entry point for children's books is the Series drop down menu. Many of the children's books are part of publishers' series and a complete listing of available titles in any formal series is available. It is possible to isolate all of the children's books by entering "child" as a "Keyword" search but you should be aware that there are over 900 children's titles in our database. Unfortunately, children's books are very difficult to classify and this area has the least keywording done in it. Entering "calendar" as a Keyword Search will return a listing of our current and upcoming calendars. There is a drop down menu that lists all the publishers' series in the database. For clarity, the publisher's name has been put at the start of the series. So the "I Want to Be" series of children's books is listed as "Firefly I Want to Be." All of the publisher's names have been entered into the "Keyword" field. The following is a list of how the names have been entered:
Every six months (Spring and Fall) Firefly Books publishes a catalog of new and backlist titles for the United States market, and two Canadian catalogs(Adult and Juvenile books). Drop down menus have been provided to allow you to recreate a web version of the new books announced in recent catalogs. This drop down menu selects the language of the intended audience of the book so selecting French or Spanish, etc will create a list of books for a specific to that market. |
